About this course

This workshop will explore the rationale for using play therapy with families and the role of the Family Play Therapist. Family assessment and intervention will be discussed, and participants will learn techniques by exploring them experientially. We will identify the benefits and limitations of family life cycle models. We will describe how Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can be considered when setting treatment goals. We will identify dynamics to observe in the assessment of family play interactions. And we will learn about a Family Play Therapy assessment technique and Family Play Therapy interventions. Lecture, interaction, and experiential activities will be used to assist learning.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe a rationale for/benefits of using play therapy with families
  • List essential roles and abilities of the Family Play Therapist
  • Discuss the importance of considering developmental/contextual issues when treating families, including individual development, systemic development, and ecosystemic variables
  • Identify benefits and limitations of family life cycle models
  • Describe how Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can be considered when setting treatment goals
  • Identify dynamics to observe in the assessment of family play interactions
  • Describe at least 1 Family Play Therapy assessment technique and at least 2 Family Play Therapy interventions

Course Instructor(s)

  • Laura Behm Dewan, MA, LMFT, RPT-S

    Laura Dewan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor who has been working with children since her teen years. She was an early childhood educator and educational consultant before becoming a play therapist, and has now counseled children and families for over 30 years. Her areas of specialty include grief and loss, military families, school-based therapy, and special education/children with emotional disabilities. Laura provides consultation, instruction, and clinical supervision to professionals pursuing LMFT/LCSW licensure or RPT registration and is passionate about making that experience playful and fun.
